Manometry System

Manometry is the measurement of pressure within various parts of the GI tract.

Esophageal manometry is a test used to measure the function of the lower esophageal sphincter and the muscles of the esophagus. The procedure is painless and done without sedation. A thin flexible catheter is passed through an anesthetized nostril into the esophagus as the patient swallows.

Anorectal manometry is a test performed to evaluate patients with constipation and fecal incontinence. This test measures the pressure of the anal sphincter muscles, the sensation in the rectum, and the neural reflexes needed for normal bowel movements.

pH metry is a procedure used to quantify exposure of esophageal mucosa to stomach acid. Esophageal pH monitoring is considered the gold standard for diagnosing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
